In the early 1960s, Joe and Alice Heitz envisioned crafting the most distinguished Chardonnay in Napa Valley. They learned under legends like Fred and Eleanor McRea from Stony Hill Vineyards up on Spring Mountain. With those ambitious goals in mind, we carry on their legacy through the expression of the Quartz Creek Vineyard Chardonnay. Situated at the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains and blanketed by the morning fog from the Petaluma Gap, this site continues to produce our most elegant and refined expression of Chardonnay. Always sustainably farmed and vinified in the classic style to evoke the purest characteristics of the land where the grapes are grown.
Ratings & Reviews
94 Points – Decanter:
“This single-vineyard Heitz Chardonnay from Quartz Creek in the Oak Knoll AVA was aged on the fine lees with stirring once per month and filtered before bottling. No malolactic fermentation. An immensely bright, vivid, and remarkably complex Chardonnay. Early-picked stone fruit and citrus aromas lead to a medium-bodied white with excellent mid-palate depth and the freshness of lemon zest laced with vanilla and framed by aromatic pops of white flowers, finishing long and lean with stony mineral notes. The acid tension here is remarkably pronounced. The Quartz Creek vineyard (formerly called Triere) was one of the original sites that made up the Burgess estate.” Drink 2023-2033. – Jonathan Cristaldi (February 2023)
92 Points – Vinous:
“The 2020 Chardonnay Quartz Creek Vineyard is a bright, vibrant wine. This fruit was picked between August 13 and 15, very early by any standard. Blocked malolactic fermentation adds to the wine’s steely feel. Citrus peel, green apple, tangerine oil, flowers and light tropical notes all grace this delineated, polished Chardonnay. This is a decidedly linear style and a wine that will require a few years in bottle to be at its most expressive.” Drink 2023-2028. – Antonio Galloni (December 2023)
91 Points – Wine Enthusiast:
“Tangy green-apple and mineral intensity is tempered by richer golden apple and baking spice flavors in this nervy, well-balanced, light-bodied wine. tastes refreshing and mouthwatering.” – Jim Gordon (September 2023)
90 Points – Wine Spectator:
“The distinctive, fresh lemon notes up front are vivid, with flavors of salt-preserved lemon and green apple, plus a hint of flint and chive blossom. This sleek white’s acidity is persistent, refreshing and nearly tart on the mouthwatering finish. Drink now. 900 cases made.” – MaryAnn Worobiec (March 2024)
