Makers Mark is a bourbon that uses wheat to give it its signature flavour profile (the vast majority of bourbons use rye as their flavour grain). The wheat gives the bourbon a soft popcorn buttery richness and flavour. Bill Samuels Jr., who created the bourbon, wanted something easy, smooth and not sharp to enjoy neat. Still hand rotated and bottled when the right flavour profile is achieved, and not by age. Also, every bottle is hand dipped into red wax to seal it. On the nose, the initial sweetness – caramel, brown sugar – gives way to soft fruity notes and vanilla. On the palate, it is more savoury than the nose suggests, with toasted nuts and cinnamon notes. The finish is quite sweet with butterscotch and dry oak spice. Enjoy neat mixed with ginger ale or in your favourite bourbon cocktail.
