About the winery:
In 2007, Marilisa Allegrini (of the Veneto’s esteemed Allegrini winery!) and Leonardo LoCascio (head of US importer Winebow) purchased the property, and brought in winemaker Nicola Biasi to build on San Polo’s already considerable reputation and impressive levels of quality: Poggio San Polo’s Brunello di Montalcino have consistently achieved outstanding ratings since the 1997 vintage.
The vineyards at San Polo were planted between 1990 and 2000 with the goal of making the highest quality Brunello di Montalcino. With an altitude of 1350 feet above sea level, their southern facing vineyard receives optimal sun exposure and is the highest in Montalcino. The vineyard also has natural terraces facing the stunning Sant’Antimo Valley and is entirely dedicated to Brunello di Montalcino.
Notes from the Winemaker:
Our Brunello from San Polo has a lengthy ageing potential and can further improve with extended bottle ageing. This is due both to the characteristics of the soils on which the grapes are grown – the calcareous content provides ideal conditions for Sangiovese – and the position of the vineyards on the beautiful hills at San Polo.
Intense and bright ruby red with garnet highlights, this wine reveals typical aromas of violets and small red berries. There is a distinctive aroma of woodland undergrowth, aromatic wood and a light note of vanilla and preserved fruit, followed by subtle nuances of coffee. The nose is intense, persistent, broad and ethereal.
Ratings & Reviews
96 Points & “Cellar Selection” – Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
“Woodland berry, forest floor, exotic spice and tobacco aromas escape the glass. It’s bright and loaded with finesse, delivering crushed red cherry, juicy cranberry, cinnamon and clove framed in taut fine-grained tannins. Vibrant acidity lends exquisite balance while a star anise note closes the lingering finish. I love the classic vibe on this -it’s the best offering I’ve had to date from this dynamic estate. Drink 2021-2038.” – Kerin O’Keefe (5/1/2018)
96 Points – James Suckling:
“Aromas of plum, dried meat, flower and figs. Full body, velvety and chewy tannins. So much fruit and intensity. I love the generous fruit and form to this wine. Drink in 2021.” (November 27, 2017)
93+ Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate:
“The Poggio San Polo 2013 Brunello di Montalcino offers bright and sweet cherry fruit that pops out with pretty intensity as soon as you lift the glass to your nose. This wine offers beautiful fruit definition and a snappy personality that sings loud and clear. So many Brunellos can taste flat and evolved, but this wine is jazzy and very lively instead. The wine is fermented in cement vats and later aged in large oak casks and tonneaux for two years. Some 50,000 bottles were made.” – Monica Larner (June 2018)
92 Points – Vinous Media:
“Deep red. Woodsy nuances of underbrush and potpourri complicate aromas of cherry kirsch and licorice. Then youthfully chewy in the mouth, featuring red cherry and licorice flavors similar to the aromas. Finishes with lively acidity and repeating licorice notes on the long back end, which also delivers some alcohol-derived heat.” – Ian D’Agata (Apr 2018)
92 Points – Wine Spectator Magazine:
“This verges on cherry liqueur flavors, along with plum, spice and chocolate notes. Modern in feel, with a direct approach, yet has a firm, dense undertow and a lingering finish. Best from 2020 through 2032. 4,000 cases made.” – BS (Jun 2018)
